Andy plays the role of the innocent man, who is doing time for a crime he did not commit. Andy Dufresne is a banker before he was convicted of murdering his wife and her lover. Andy is shipped to Shawshank Maximum Security Prison to spend the time of his life.
Andy slowly becomes friends with Red, an experienced lifer and his gang. Shortly Andy also becomes popular with the prison guards also the vicious Captain Hadley offered him protection against the jail's not so friendly convicts in exchange for financial counseling.
The warden also takes benefits from Andy's banking knowledge by exchanging privileges for creative bookkeeping. Over twenty years of time in prison Andy is able to maintain his sanity and dignity by his mental force. "

There he is be-friended by con-wise "Red," played by Morgan Freeman. The movie largely chronicles the life of the lawyer and how he deals with a convict's life. The movie is narrated by Red, telling the story of what happened before he was finally set free. The redemption part of the title is how the lawyer "gets even" for his loss of freedom."
