Review By David Loftus "The Ghost and Mr. Chicken"
Starring: Don Knotts, Joan Staley, Liam Redmond, Dick Sargent
Luther Heggs (Knotts) is the jerky oddball typesetter for the town paper. He'd like to become an actual reporter and covets the the town beauty, Alma (Staley), who of course is going with the paper's main writer, Ollie (Skip Homeier). To win a reporting position and the girl, Luther courageously volunteers to stay overnight at the "Old Simmons House" on the 20th anniversary of the infamous murder/suicide of Mr. and Mrs. Simmons. The story is that the ghost of Mr. Simmons may be heard playing the organ at midnight. Luther scares the pants off himself when he sees the organ playing at midnight, but becomes the town hero the next day. Unfortunately, a nephew of the Simmons couple sues for libel, and Luther is made to look foolish in court. The judge decides the only way to test the veracity of Luther's story is for the court to spend another night in the haunted house. This 1966 film was based on one of the most popular episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show," with the Knotts' popular Barney Fife character given a different name and moved from Mayberry to Laurel, Kansas. Knotts gives a splendid comic performance.
