| Two young children, Emmeline (Shields) and Richard (Atkins) and an old man named Paddy Button (McKern) are the sole survivors of a shipwreck after the boat they are sailing on catches fire. Stranded together on a tropical island, they have to learn to survive. Paddy teaches the pair how to build a shelter,rules of safety on the island as well as how to fish and collect food.
One morning they awaken to find that Paddy has died. Alone now, without the intervention and guidance of grown ups, the two live together and act in a civilized manner as though they were brother and sister. The years go by as the movie follows them as they grow up, and suddenly both begin to experience strange emotions and don't understand the source. They have no one but each other to talk to. They begin to feel a physical attraction towards each other but don't know it as such. Nature takes its course one day as they are swimming naked in the lagoon and Emmeline becomes pregnant, however she has no idea at all that a baby is growing inside of her. The two, sensing that they are in love with each other, construct their own version of a wedding ceremony and exchange rings that they've both made from materials in their surroundings. But danger lurks on the island. Over the years Richard and Emmeline had heard strange drum sounds coming from the other side of the island but Paddy had forbidden them to ever venture over there. On the night that their son, whom they name Paddy is born, Richard discovers the source of the odd sounds- a gathering of a frightening clan who sacrifice members on an altar to their god. In fear for their lives Richard begins to construct a boat so the three of them can get off the island, and away from the menacing threat of the clan.
