Josh Hartnett plays Matt Sullivan,a clumsy if nice web designer, still grieving the break-up of with his girlfriend Nicole (Vinessa Shaw). To get over her and to set his lifestraight he decides to take a sexual abstinence vow for 40 days and 40 nights. But keeping is far from easy: not only is job colleagues set bets about how many days he'll hold on to it and will do anything to win the prize money, but also in the first night he meets Erica (Shannyn Sossamon) that can be the perfect cure for his love pains in the very first night of the vow!
