Review Summary and Plot Commentary about 8 Mile
Following a story somewhat similar to Eminem's real-life past, this movie follows rapper Jimmy Smith, Jr. through the 8 mile line of Detroit. Jimmy's just trying to keep his dreams of escaping Detroit alive. His personal battles wage in his home life and love life, as he tries to rap his way to the top.
--Becky Lee, Resident Scholar

Rabbit is a poor white boy struggling to become a famous rapper. His mom is a druggie who tries to ruin his life.
--Karina Reeves, Resident Scholar

When we first fade from the title of 8 Mile, we see Rabbit (Eminem, solo artist and of rap group D-12), a representative of the rap crew "Three One Third," getting hype before a battle at the Shelter.
Rabbit's struggles with many people... his mother and her goldigging ways, his issues with the wrong women, his ongoing beef with "The Free World," the antagonist of the hip-hop scene in Detroit, and the struggle within himself to overcome everything, from The Nothing Label in life to the White Label in Rap.

--A.D. Tandy, Resident Scholar

This is a story about a rapper in the hood.
