| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The American President |
Michael Douglas plays the president of the United States Alan Shephard. His former wife has died of cancer; he's now ready for female companionship. He meets Sydney Allen Wade, a political activist and journalist, fighting for environmental policy change. He is enchanted by her and actively pursues her. Unfortunately the press corps won't let him alone and try to make his personal relationship fodder for the next election campaign. Top of the list of his bashers is the top senator running against him, who uses the woman's former protesting years against her and the president. Will their relationship stand up to the pressure? Can Sydney ignore the fact that he is an important man and just enjoy his company? Will the senator use the president's romance against him and win the presidency for himself?

Michael Douglas plays a liberal American President who has a romance with the very butch Annette Bening (she cut off her hair for the part). But the evil right wingers attack the President for having a butch girlfriend, and he finds it hard to push his liberal agenda while sleeping with her at the same time.
