| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Audition |
AUDITION (Ôdishon) is a movie directed by Takashi Miike in 1999.
Shigeharu Aoyama lives alone with his son since the death of his wife seven years before. Yoshikawa, one of his producers, offers to be present at an audition for his next movie. As Yoshikawa is looking for a young woman to play the main character of the movie, Shigeharu could find a woman he could love.
Indeed, at this occasion, Shigeharu falls in love with Asami, a young woman living alone. She'll tell Shigeharu that she has been severely molested as a kid by her uncle and that she's vainly looked for a man who could protect her until now. Blinded by love, Shigeharu doesn't listen to Yoshikawa who's remarked that all the claims made by Asami during the audition are false.

When Aoyama (Ishabashi) learns that male black sea bream, similar to one he just ate, “change sex at 15 centimeters,” the cultural tone of this 1999 Director's Cut (Takashi Miike) is set. Although Aoyama is a successful movie producer, his dreams are of remarrying after seven years of widowhood. But lacking the confidence to search for a “young, well-trained” girl, he arranges a “fake” (but fabulously edited) audition to interview dozens of young girls quickly. When beautiful Asami Yamakazi (Shiina) captivates him with her “thoughtfulness,” his friend Yasuhisa (Kunimura) and his son each sense “bad chemistry.” Still, Aoyama dines her nightly, admitting there never was a movie part, setting a shift to an atypical revenge movie. Through flashbacks of child abuse intercut with hallucinogenic dreams, we must reason what is real and what is not--especially the 12-minute, real-time torture scene near the end.
