| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Battle Royale |
In a dystopic alternate-history Japan, a randomly-selected class of ninth-graders are put on a deserted island (an annual custom) and told to kill each other within three days until one survivor is left, or they all die. The bulk of the story can be seen as a series of vignettes or encounters which invariably result in the death of one or more of the students, as they gradually eliminate each other; friendships fall apart, relationships are tested, and hidden agendas come to light as the students each deal with the kill-or-be-killed scenario. Some characters choose to "play the game" and kill their classmates; others try to form alliances; others choose to take their own lives; and others try to find a way to fight against their captors and escape. The main character, Shuya Nanahara, has only two things in mind--to protect Noriko, the girl his now-dead best friend had a crush on, and to seek out the friends he trusts so they can team up and figure a way out.

Forty-two students from a Japanese high school are placed on a desert island and forced by the government to kill each other until only one remains. They have three days, if there is no winner by then, everyone will die.

BATTLE ROYALE is a movie directed by Kinji Fukasaku in 2000. The picture earned seven nominations for the japanese Academy Awards.
In a few years, the japanese population will fear its own children who have become so violent that the governement will have to establish the Battle Royale law. Every year, an entire class of students will be left alone on a Pacific island. For three days, they will be forced to kill each other because only one of them, the last survivor, will be allowed to come back to civilization.
