| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Joint Security Area |
JOINT SECURITY AREA is a Korean movie co-written and directed by Chan-wook Park in 2000. This picture was nominated for the Golden Bear of the 2001 Berlin Film Festival and must absolutely be rediscovered.
The setting is a sensitive point on the 38th parallel dividing the two Koreas. Two North Koreans soldiers have been killed during the night. A Swiss lawyer is sent in the DMZ in order to find out what has really happened that night as the reports of the survivors, a North Korean and a South Korean, are contradictory. It's a hard job for the young woman who must prevent that the situation deteriorates between the two countries.
After several questionings of the survivors, she will finally understand that the guards had become friends over the months and that they regularly met on the northern part of the frontier. But there are still unanswered questions. For instance, who else was present at the checkpoint when the shooting began?
