Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Eating
About three dozen women gather at a suburban Los Angeles home to celebrate the birthdays of Helene (Richards), turning 40; Kate (Crosby), 30; and Sadie (Giovi), 50. When the cake is served, no one will touch it, save Helene's mother, classy Whitney (Bergen). A French goddess, Martine (Alard), pretends to be a filmmaker shooting a film about "Southern California behavior," but it turns out she is really studying women and their relations with food. (Martine herself is a recovering anorexic.) Men exert a powerful offstage presence -- Helene learns her husband is having an affair, Sadie fears her younger boyfriend is interested in her daughter -- but this 1990 film, much of it improvised by the actresses from their own experiences, is a somewhat exhausting and one-dimensional marathon portrait of women and their obsession with food and their figures.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar
