| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about 24 Hour Party People |
This film shows the history of contemporary Manchester music from punk to rave in digestible film format. The film centers around Tony Wilson (Coogan) television presenter turned promoter who becomes inspired to start a label after seeing the Sex Pistols perform. 24 Hour Party People traces his odyssey to bring music to the masses through signing and struggling with bands including Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays. Wilson also fights to find a venue, and thus opens the Hacienda Club – which eventually became the “Mad-chester” rave-era equivalent of Studio 54. The plot is barely fictionalized as it is based on Wilson's life and those of the people and bands around him. He acts as the narrator of his own life story. Excellent music with the obligatory sex, drugs and rock ‘n' roll. Not wholly a drama as it is very, very funny in parts with snappy dialogue.
Film directed by Michael Winterbottom (Welcome to Sarajevo).
