| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about A Woman in Flames |
In "Die Flambierte Frau (A Woman in Flames)", bored and frustrated upper-class housewife Eva (Landgrebe) leaves her arrogant and controlling husband and becomes a pricey call girl in Berlin. For a while a veteran prostitute named Yvonne (Lafari) teaches her the basics. But Eva gets involved with a customer named Chris, who turns out to be a bisexual call boy. She moves into his place, which is spacious enough for both of them to continue their separate occupations on the premises. But Chris becomes as possessive as her husband, and Eva's tension level climbs toward a nervous explosion. Co-writer and director Robert van Ackeren intended to present a metaphor for modern, consumer-obsessed Germany--he's more interested in criticizing capitalism than in sex--and this 1983 film is more provoking and confusing than a satisfying piece of work, but Landgrebe gives the role her all.
