Lee Umstetter (Nolte) is a lifer at San Quentin prison with nothing left to live for until it's suggested he start taking advantage of the prison library. In reading, he becomes interested in life again. He writes a play and decides to put it on with the help of his fellow inmates. A local critic (Taggart) falls in love with the playwright and does her best to help him. Eventually, he is freed and decides to stage his production in the free world. First, he has to find those now ex-cons who were in the original production before they take the show on the road.
