| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Egg and I |
Bob (MacMurray) and Betty (Colbert) MacDonald are newlyweds. On their wedding night, Bob surprises Betty with news that he's purchased a chicken farm. He's enthusiastic, almost giddy, at the prospect of leaving the rat race. But the property has been abandoned and, when they arrive, it's in worse shape than expected. Bob remains cheerful and optimistic while Betty sulks.
There are, however, the neighbors. Harriett Putnam (Allbritton) is a little too friendly toward Bob, which is a continual source of tension for Betty. The other neighbors are Ma and Pa Kettle (Main and Kilbride), a down-to-earth bunch with a huge brood, who help the MacDonalds adjust to their new rural life. Betty is eventually so tested that she decides to leave life on the young MacDonald farm. What about Bob?
“The Egg and I” was extremely popular in no small part thanks to Ma and Pa Kettle. Universal Studios decided to create a series of films starring these characters. The book that became a film and a lively film series, eventually became a television series. These were also exceedingly popular.
