This is a Korean War drama based on the book of the same name by James Michener.
Lt. Harry Brubaker is a World War II Navy pilot who has been called up to serve in the Korean War. Brubaker is a good pilot and patriotic American but is angry at having his life disrupted by this war while other Americans are free to go about their lives and careers oblivious to the little war in Korea. Other reservists have not been called up and he resents the fact that he is among the few who have to sacrifice career and family to fight again after having fought in World War II.
The aircraft carrier he has been assigned to has been given the task of destroying the bridges at Toko-Ri which lie in a heavily fortified mountain valley. But before they carry out the mission the carrier puts into Tokyo for shore leave. Harry has arranged for his wife and daughters to join him in Tokyo. Both Harry and his wife, Nancy, struggle with his mission and their fears about it. The time in Tokyo is poignant as Harry and Nancy each attempt to keep each other's spirits up and try to have a happy family vacation under very trying circumstances. As Harry leaves to return to the carrier both he and his wife know that this could be their final good-by.
In the end the carrier puts back out to sea and Harry puts his fears and resentment aside to do the mission. The last part of the movie is action packed as Harry and his fellow pilots make the successful raid on the bridges.
