| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Butterfly Murders |
THE BUTTERFLY MURDERS (Die bian) is the first movie, shot in 1979, of the Hong-Kong born director Tsui Hark.
A famed scholar -Fong- and the chief of an emerging clan -Tien- are invited in the castle of Shum in order to help him understand why his people are attacked and killed by swarms of bloody butterflies. It seems that the solution of this enigma is hidden somewhere in the labyrinthic caves of the castle.
When Shum is killed by the butterflies, his wife announces that Shum's last will won't be revealed unless the three killers known as the Three Thunders are present. Soon after their arrival in the castle, these killers, all masters in the martial arts, start to fight the Tien clan. Tien understands, but too late, that Shum, who hasn't been killed after all and knows how to command the butterflies, has gotten him there in order to get rid of the Tien clan.
