| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about 5 Fingers |
5 FINGERS is a film co-written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz in 1950. The picture is based on "Operation Cicero", a novel written by the German diplomat L.C. Moyzisch.
Diello, the British ambassador's butler in Turkey, contacts the German embassy and tells the military attaché that he can sell him top secret documents. The Germans are at first skeptical, but the first documents delivered by Diello turn out to be authentic. Diello benefits from the absolute confidence of the ambassador who doesn't suspect that, every night, his butler is photographing the content of his safe.
Diello's goal is to get 200,000 pounds from the Germans and retire and live happily in Rio de Janeiro in the company of the countess Anna Staviska, the ruined widow of a Polish noble. After a few weeks, London sends an investigator to Ankara in order to discover who's responsible for the leaks coming out of the embassy.
