Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Wedding Date
This short romantic comedy focuses on Kat (Debra Messing) and Nick (Dermot Mulroney). The beginning of the film is set in New York City and shows that they come together because Kat feels compelled to bring a special someone to her half-sister's wedding because of society's views of single women and old maids. She does the modern thing because she is a modern woman. Kat hires an escort. She picks Nick because she had read a magazine interview done on him. Their first scenes together are on the airplane, first class, of course, and Kat is having an anxiety attack until she sees him. One can feel the romance heating up - or is it lust?
London is the next setting (all are pretty posh) and continues with Kat's relationships. Her mother is afraid of having a single daughter as though being a successful, professional woman were not enough. Her ex-boyfriend is the best man at the wedding and Kat wants to make him sorry he left her and jealous of new 'beau', Nick. Kat's half-sister, Amy, is the bride and they obviously have a competitive, love/hate relationship. Kat's good friend/cousin, T.J., plays the big-mouthed, sexually centered comedian part. The bridal shower, the rehearsal dinner and the bachelor party provide classic backdrops for comedy and/or love scenes. The bridal shower's theme is golf and leads to some interesting clothing choices on the part of the women. There are a few sexual settings and events in this film but the focus again, is comedy. When Nick takes a shower and steps out to dry off, Kat is mortified but tries to sneak an extra peek. (We don't see everything she sees.)
The wedding takes place in a small village in England with some enthralling scenery. Kat has finally realized that it isn't what everyone else thinks that matters, the important thing is the truth and the truth is not always on the cover of the book! Amy and Kat have a heart-to-heart discussion on love, love-gone-bad, extra-marital affairs and secrets and by the end of the wedding, one gets the feeling a smidgeon of Kat's goodness has rubbed off on Amy.
