Ellie Andrews (Claudette Colbert), a rebellious daughter of a millionaire, tries to show her independence and marries a cute playboy with no money to his name. Her father is outraged, he annuls the marriage, kidnaps his own daughter and locks her up on a yacht. Ellie escapes, jumping from the boat and swimming ashore to Miami. Her father starts searching for her, alerts the police and newspapers, hires the best detectives and sets a generous a reward. All the airports, boats, and trains are watched, but Ellie is no fool, she anticipates this and decides to travel back to New York by bus. On the buss, she meets Peter Warne (Clark Gable), a recently fired newspaper reporter. Peter notices the naïve young lady traveling alone, and later recognizes her. He offers to accompany her to New York, watch over her (she needs this, knowing so little about the world), and make sure she gets back to her husband – in exchange for an exclusive story. Ellie agrees, they continue the journey together and, of course, end up falling in love.
