He puts in a hard days work and then takes Anna to the dance where he tells her he wants to marry her. Anna isn't too keen on the idea as she is secretly seeing police officer Slim Johnson (William Gargan). While at the dance, Anna sneaks off to speak with Slim who tells her he is going to Pittsburgh. Anna leaves Joe a note and takes off with Slim. This crushes Joe who goes to the bar and gets drunk. He then shows up at the labor union meeting and splits the union. For a brief moment he is annointed president of the new union but things fall apart. In effort to rectify things, and just as Anna comes back to town, Joe takes the mine hostage and fills it with dynamite hoping that by the end of the siege he will get all his buddies back their jobs.
