| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Call Northside 777 |
CALL NORTHSIDE 777 is a Fox production directed by Henry Hathaway in 1948.
In 1933, Frank Wiecek is sentenced to 99 years of prison for having killed a policeman in Wanda Skutnik's speakeasy. During his trial, Wanda Skutnik accused him of being one of the robbers while two other eyewitnesses were unable to make up their mind. But, in the state of Illinois, the testimony of only one eyewitness is enough to convict a man.
Eleven years later, Wiecek's mother runs an ad in a newspaper promising $5000 to anyone proving his son's innocence. P.J. McNeal, a journalist at the Chicago Tribune, is asked by his boss to interview the old lady. Soon, the story of Frank Wiecek interests Chicago readers and McNeal, at first uncertain, starts to believe in Wiecek's innocence. The prisoner passes with success a lie detector test but McNeal needs a new conclusive evidence if he wants Wiecek to be released by the Pardon Board.
