Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Anywhere But Here
Adele August (Saradon) wants to leave her small home town and have an adventure in Beverly Hills. She takes her reluctant daughter Ann (Portman) with her. They don't get along. Adele is wild and free, always looking for the best in life. Ann feels like she has to act like the adult seeing as her mother isn't one.
Adele wants Ann to become a movie star but all Ann wants is to run away back to her old town and her best friend, her cousin Benny. But an encounter with a policeman on Christmas night makes Ann realise she can wait until college to escape from her mum.
One day a phone call comes saying that Benny has been in an accident and was killed. Ann finally gets to go back and visit her old town but doesn't enjoy it because Benny is gone.
While Adele starts to accept that she might never find true love, Ann is pursued by a boy at school. At first she ignores him but in a vulnerable moment, they get together and she makes a true friend.
