Review Summary and Plot Commentary about X-Men 3: The Last Stand
Twenty years before the not-too-distant future, Professor Xavier and Magneto visit the home of the young Jean Grey, who is the most powerful mutant they have encountered. The next scene depicts a bathroom ten years later, where a young boy covered in blood is crying as he frantically tries to remove wings from his back. The boy's scientist father enters and is distraught to find that his son has been stricken with the mutant gene. In the not-too-distant future, six X-men are training in the battleroom without Scott, who is still mourning Jean Grey. Seeking closure, Scott returns to Alkali Lake, where it is discovered that Jean is still alive. She is brought back to the mansion, where Xavier tells Logan that Jean actually has two personalities, the violent and powerful Phoenix, and the Jean Grey they remember. The Phoenix awakens and leaves the mansion to return to her childhood home, where a violent altercation occurs as both Magneto and Xavier attempt to woo her to their sides. After a psychic battle with the Professor, Jean leaves with Magneto.

Hank McCoy (Beast), the secretary of Mutant Affairs is informed by the president that a “cure” has been invented for mutancy as the result of a mutant boy who neutralizes other mutants. This draws mixed reactions and causes much protesting, which Magneto uses to gather troops for his Brotherhood.

Magneto leads the Brotherhood in an attack on Alcatraz Island (now home of the research facility responsible for inventing the cure, as well as the mutant boy who is the source of the cure). The X-men must confront Jean and the Brotherhood in order to stop them from destroying the cure in their attempt to make mutants the dominant species on the planet.
