| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Matador |
Julian Noble (Pierce Brosnan) is a hitman on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Danny Wright (Greg Kinnear) is an average Joe salesman whose life has been in freefall since his son died. When the two meet over drinks at a Mexico City hotel's bar, they at first hit it off, until a dirty joke from Julian at an insensitive moment sends Danny away in shocked horror.
The next day, when Julian arrives with apologies and tickets to a bullfight, Danny agrees to give him one more shot. At the arena, Julian reveals his profession and takes the shocked Danny on a step-by-step walkthrough of a hit. The two form a friendship that is abruptly shattered later that day when Julian asks Danny to help him out on a "job" and Danny walks off in a huff.
Six months later, Julian, having earned the ire of his handler (Philip Baker Hall) with a series of panic attacks and botched hits, arrives at Danny's doorstep begging for shelter and help. It seems that Julian's employers are willing to allow him one last chance, by killing a man at a racetrack in Tuscon. Can Danny help him out just this once?
