| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Knock on Any Door |
A small time hoodlum, Nick Romano, is accused of robbing a bar and killing a cop. He calls a lawyer friend of his and says he's innocent.
At first, the lawyer, Andy, refuses to take the case, but he quickly changes his mind.
At the trial, Andy begins by telling the jury Nick's life story. About how his dad died in prison, how he turned to crime to support himself and how he spent some time in a harsh reformatory. He explains how Nick repeatedly pulled himself out of the slums, but kept falling back in. He tells how Nick met a nice girl, settled down and got married and got an honest job.
But, after being fired he returned to crime. After robbing a ticket booth he returns home to find that his wife had killed herself.
Andy recounted Nick's entire troubled life.
Two of Nick's friends were his alibi, lying about where he was during the crime.
Nick took the stand and denied everything. But, after several hours of being badgered and taunted by the prosecutor he broke. To Andy's surprise and disappointment, Nick confessed to everything.
At the sentencing Andy begged the judge for mercy, but it was no use. Nick was sentenced to death in the electric chair.
