| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about When Night is Falling |
Camille (played by Pascale Bussieres) is an academic at a christian theology school. Somewhat shy and prudish, she is engaged to be married to Martin (played by Henry Czerny), a fellow theologian. Both are being flagged for advancement at the school.
She lives alone, and, although she is in a relationship with Martin, Camille is attached to her dog - so much so that, when her dog dies unexpectedly, Camille is distraught. Unable to part with the creature, she places its body in her refrigerator and takes care of some domestic chores. During a fit of tears at the laundromat, Camille encounters Petra (played by Rachael Crawford), who tries to comfort her. Petra orchestrates a "switcheroo" of their clothes, so that, when she returns home with the laundry, Camille finds that the clothes are not hers, but Petra's. Petra has also thoughtfully (!) included a scrap of paper with her name and phone number. Intrigued, and wanting to recover her clothes, Camille contacts Petra and arranges to meet her.
Petra is a performer in an artsy circus, where her act involves a form of rhythmic gymnastics routine done with special lighting effects. Camille is mesmerized by the performance, and, once Petra has finished her rehearsal, meets Petra in her trailer to pick up her clothes. Petra admits to being infatuated with Camille, which confuses and flusters the reserved theologian. While Petra clearly desires Camille, Camille instead proposes friendship.
The two women get to know each other, during which time Camille's interest in Martin wanes. In one thoroughly unexpected moment, the two women kiss in the hallway of Camille's apartment, and Camille realizes that the infatuation is mutual. The filmmaker presents a tenderly erotic scene with the two women.
Martin inevitably learns of the affair and, enraged, challenges Camille. Both of their careers are in jeopardy because of Camille's indiscretions. Camille comes to question her vocation and her future with Martin.
The circus, however, is leaving town, and Petra with it. Camille is faced with a difficult decision: to continue in her stable, somewhat comfortable life in the city, or to leave for places and experiences unknown with Petra.
