Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Suspect Zero
This stylish thriller centers on an FBI search for a serial killer. Special Agent Tom Mackelway {Eckhart}is going through a tough time. Six months earlier, he nabbed a serial killer in Mexico, only to have the case thrown out on a technicality -- Tom hadn't gotten an extradition order before bringing the perp back to the U.S. After being excoriated in the press, Tom is demoted from his cushy position in Dallas to "the minors," the Albuquerque office. To make matters worse, Tom's been plagued with excruciating headaches which have left him on edge.

On his first day at his new job, Tom receives a ream of faxes. He's about to call the phone number listed on them when his boss sends him to the site of a grisly murder, where he's teamed with his former partner, Fran. (There's a hint these two were romantically involved in the past.) The victim is found with one of his eyelids cut away and a note, emblazoned with an O or zero, fastened to him. Tom figures that he might be dealing with a serial murder. When more killings with the same modus operandi and a plethora of faxes arrive at the office, he's sure of it.

Tom tracks down Benjamin O'Ryan (Kingsley), the person responsible for sending the faxes. This isn't hard to do, as O'Ryan seems to want Tom to find him. Once they meet, Tom has to decide if O'Ryan is the crazed murderer or, as O'Ryan himself claims, a renegade FBI agent on the trail of the killer. In addition, O'Ryan's faxes are prescient in regard to the victims as well as Tom's migraines. Could O'Ryan be clairvoyant? Even if Tom can accept this notion, he'd have a tough time convincing Fran and his higher-ups at the Bureau of this.
