|This movie was directed by William A. Wellman in 1954 and earned six nominations for the Academy awards but only Dimitri Tiomkin earned the award in the Best Music category.
In the middle of the flight 420 journey between Honolulu and San Francisco, a mechanical problem occurs; the plane loses one of its four engines and the remaining tanks of fuel are perforated. The plane loses little by little altitude and John Sullivan and Dan Roman, pilot and co-pilot of the plane, announce to the passengers that the plane will have to land on sea, on the Pacific ocean.
Each passenger reacts in his own way and relives eventful episodes of his life but the crew manages to control everything. A few hours later, Dan Roman (Wayne) tries to persuade the pilot John Sullivan (Stack) to give up the idea of landing on the Pacific, with very little chances of survival for the passengers, and try to reach San Francisco and count on their luck to do so.
