Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Beyond The Mat
This theatrically released movie follows the lives of several wrestlers and promotions. Barry Blaustein (writer of several Eddie Murphy movies) is a lifelong fan of the sport and treats the subject matter and fans of wrestling with respect. The movie has several stories within it.

Mick Foley

One of the subjects followed in the movie is Mick Foley. He has backstage access to the brutal Foley vs Rock match at the 1999 Royal Rumble. This scene is quite upsetting as he focuses his camera on the reactions of Mick's children as he is being hit in the head repeatedly by The Rock. Foley comes across as a good family man and is very upset when he sees the reactions his kids have towards his brutal matches.

Terry Funk

The movie follows Terry Funk as he becomes ECW champion and then holds his retirement show a few months later. As we all know, this retirement didn't last too long, but it was touching to see all the respect the younger wrestlers have for him. It is amazing the matches this man is able to put on considering that he was barely able to get out of bed in the morning to due the extensive damage to his knees.

Jake Roberts

The movie has a scene focusing on famous wrestlers that are working the indy shows. The cameras follow Jake in a bizarre sequence that shows a very troubled life. One of the highlights of the movie should be the reunion with his estranged daughter. Unfortunately, his daughter is so scared of him that she needed to bring friends with her. In addition, after the emotional reunion it is implied that Jake was so overwhelmed by the meeting that he used some substances afterwards.

Puke

The movie shows the meetings of Vince McMahon and his newest wrestler Darren Drozdoff. Darren has the unique ability to puke at will. Droz shows off this talent in Vince's office while Vince comes up with the way he is going to commentate on the puking. During the end credits, it is announced that Droz became paralyzed from the waist down due to injuries suffered in a match.

New Jack

ECW star New Jack is a former bounty hunter with several so-called justified homicides. Barry uses his Hollywood contacts to get New Jack a reading. The people he reads for then have a debate if he could be cast as a Denzel Washington or just one of Denzel's friends.
