| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Quills |
How much impact does society trully have on an individual? This is answered in Quills. Geoffrey Rush plays the Marquis de Sade, a true historical French pornographer who died in 1804 at the asylum Charenton. Rush is in love with Kate Winslet (Madeliene) who is a chambermaid. Joaquin Phoenix is a priest (Abbe de Coulmier) who is also in love with Winslet, despite his religious convictions.
The government sends in Dr. Royer-Collard (Michael Caine) to silence the Marquis who is publishing pornographic novels. Caine represents society as a cold, unforgiving entity.
Over the course of the story, Rush fights for freedom of press, while Phoenix strives to find who he trully is. The road to discovery is long with casualties.
This movie was beautifully made. It is for those who are not too pretentious to watch things of a pornographic nature and who enjoy a trully artistic and literary work.

This is an extraordinarily fine film with brilliant acting, pacing, depiction of history. Since it is about the Marquis de Sade snf hid "early pornaography" it may not be the film for everyone, but if a detailed albeit lurid glance at one of history's more famous writers appeals to the viewer, this is an entertaining and disturbing film.
