| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Thunder Birds |
Veteran WWI pilot Steve Britt arrives at Thunderbird Field, Arizona and convinces Officer McDonald to hire him as a civilian flight instructor for the American, British and Chinese cadets who are eager to learn to fly. There, Britt makes the acquaintance of Cadet Peter Stackhouse, the son of one of his war comrades. Unfortunately, Peter Stackhouse suffers from vertigo and Steve Britt, who firmly believes that Peter is a natural, tries his best to convince the military hierarchy to give Peter more time to control his phobia.
During one of his days off, Stackhouse meets Kay Saunders, Britt's former girl-friend and falls for her. Although Britt is still in love with the young woman, he doesn't let his feelings affect his judgement about Stackhouse and, during their last flight together, in order to proove that the young man is able to fly alone, takes his parachute and jumps from the plane. But right at this moment, a sand storm comes from the desert and Stackhouse manages to land in the middle of nowhere in order to save Britt's life. Thanks to her charm, Kay Sanders will manage to convince Officer Macdonald not to dismiss Stackhouse who was blamed for having destroyed his Thunderbird while trying to save his instructor. Directed by William A. Wellman in 1942.
