| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Hidden Fortress |
Two selfish, squabbling farmers left with nothing in the wake of a brutal war stumble upon an odd traveling party consisting of a domineering strong man, a pretty young woman, and some pack horses. Turns out the man is a disguised general sneaking his defeated rulers' heir -- a princess -- across enemy territory with the clan's gold to safety with an ally, and he commandeers the farmers to help him. This 1958 Kurosawa swashbuckler was intended to spoof the popular swordplay thrillers of the day; it has plenty of action and humor and is perhaps the director's most accessible film for Western viewers. George Lucas has professed a great fondness for this movie, and you can see the basic Star Wars plot, with a Han Solo, a princess, and two comic characters (the farmers become C3PO and R2D2) crossing enemy territory, but it's a richer plot, with more complex characters than Lucas's space opera/comic book.
