| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Eight Men Out |
This is the story of the 1919 Chicago White Sox scandal. The team, a strong favorite to win the World Series, throws the championship on a bribe to show up their penny-pinching owner (Clifton James). However, not all the players want to go along with the plan, like Buck Weaver (John Cusack), but are unable to do anything as the rest of the team goes along with it. Sure enough, the Sox lose the series and the scandal is unconvered. The team is then found guilty and banned from baseball for life. This is a great drama to watch, and it is truly a sad story, for the careers of many great ballplayers were cut short, and some were denied a chance at the Hall of Fame (especially "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, played by D.B. Sweeney).

John Sayles presents a fine retelling of the 1919 Boston "Black Sox" scandal. Underpaid baseball players agree to "throw" the World Series for a cut of the gambling profits. John Cusack is stellar as a clean-cut player who refuses to go along and carries the team's awful secret on his back. Strathairn is a wonderfully aching pitcher, D.B. Sweeney the simple Shoeless Joe Jackson. Many other cameos light up this fine movie: Charlie Sheen as an outfielder, Christopher Lloyd and Michael Lerner as varied interested gamblers, Studs Terkel and Sayles himself as reporters.
