| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about After Life |
In this sweet, delicate, and calm 1999 film from Japan, a variety of individuals gather at a manor the instant after their deaths. The staff tells them they have one week to choose a single moment from their lives which they will be allowed to take with them into eternity; the staff will re-create that moment for them and all else will be forgotten. We watch perhaps half a dozen individuals evaluate the significant and moving experiences of their lives. There is also a minor mystery about who the staff people are and why they are there. The film is surprisingly funny at times, and very gentle and lovely food for thought.
