The Apartment starring Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine is a great film that many believe is director Billy Wilder's best. The 1960 Best Picture winner is set in New York and tells the story of a insurance worker who works his way up the corporate ladder by allowing his bosses to use his apartment to spend time with their lovers. He then begins to take interest in a elevator operator yet he's torn when he finds that she is one of the girls being seen by his boss. The film is a mix between a romantic comedy and a drama and both themes are served well. Lemmon gives his best protrayal as the everyman and MacLaine is wonderful as the sweet, yet vulernable victim of love.

For their followup to the sublime "Some Like It Hot," Wilder and Diamond wrote a part just for Jack Lemmon: mid-level insurance executive C.C. Baxter, who climbs the corporate ladder extra fast by lending out his apartment to his bosses who use it to meet their lovers. Push comes to shove, however, when Baxter falls in love with sweet elevator girl Fran Kubelik (MacLaine), and learns the big boss (MacMurray) has been meeting her at Baxter's apartment! "The Apartment" has a more bittersweet edge than its predecessor -- there's a gun and an attempted suicide -- but it's just as funny. The movie won the Oscar for best picture in 1960.
