| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Gallipoli |
Two exceptionally fast runners, one a farm/ranch boy (Archy - Mark Lee), the other a seeming jack-of-all-trades (Frank - Mel Gibson), meet after a race. They decide to travel together to Perth, though at first only Archy wishes to join the army. Afterwards, they train in Cairo, gaining experience, and then travel to Gallipoli. The situation in Gallipoli: the Australians and New Zealanders (ANZAC) need to divert Turkish attention away from the British, who are landing on another beach. A badly planned attack, involving a time mishap, forces the ANZAC troops to "go over the top" of the trenches (after 2 other EXTREMELY unsuccessful and futile attempts), which kills many. Frank is used as a runner of messages during this, after Archy gives up/advises the Major to give him this role (though Archy is the faster of the two). This plays an important role in the ending, which will remain unrevealed here, a more distinctly heart-rending and enraging climax than any other I've seen.
