Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Full Monty
In desperate straits during the Thatcher era, six unemployed steel workers in the northern blue collar town of Sheffield notice a Chippendale-style show raking in money and decide to try doing a strip show themselves. Chief among them is Gaz (Carlyle), a bitter but loving divorced father who needs the money to win joint support of his 12-year-old son, and Dave (Addy), a devoted husband who is self-conscious about his weight. The men are all far from hunks, and not very good dancers either -- save for Gerald (Wilkinson) who can bust a move or two -- and the big question on everyone's mind is whether they'll go for "the full monty" and show everything. Though the humor is often broad and coarse (and the accents thick), the movie is never mean-spirited, and in fact can be quite tender as well as warmly funny. It gave Hot Chocolate's mid-70s single "You Sexy Thing" a new lease on life in 1997.

Some American viewers may find the tough English brogue and slang to be a bit difficult to
follow, but that aside, “The Full Monty” is one of the best British films. It is the story of six
unemployed men from Newcastle who suddenly come upon the idea of getting rich by
forming an all-male striptease act. Their plans are to go “the full monty” (meaning, “baring
all”) in the presentations. Now these six are as far removed in appearance from the
Chippendales as you would expect and the movie explores one hilarious scene after
another. Underneath, of course, is the socially significant issues of unemployment and
failing family and social lives. These six friends work hard to overcome their personal and
“professional” obstacles in this at times hilarious show!
