| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Zorba the Greek |
“Will you teach me to dance?” asks Basil (Alan Bates) of Zorba (Anthony Quinn) in
Michael Cacoyannis' immortal “Zorba the Greek.” And not even Fred and Ginger have tripped the light fantastic more effectively, more convincingly than this unlikely duo--a
young English writer and Zorba, a local Greek islander, who is more filled with the love forliving than anything else (except for the ouzo he drinks, perhaps)! Smooth, slick, crude, the gregarious Zorba convinces Basil to invest in a mining venture, which, of course, proves disastrous, financially and otherwise. Along the way, however, young Basil learns more about life, about love, and, yes, even
more about dancing than he could ever have dreamed. At times both comic and tragic, the 1964 film moves at lightning pace, complemented with an outstanding movie score and masterly cinematography, all worthy of the honors won. Winning seven Academy Awards, this classic black and white film also starred Irene Pappas and Lila Kedrova and was based upon the Nikos Kazantzakis novel.
