| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Without Limits |
This movie was made because producer and Prefontaine fan Tom Cruise said it would be. Veteran writer-director Robert Towne ("Personal Best," "Chinatown" screenplay) did the honors here, collaborating with Pre's former track rival and friend Kenny Moore on the script. Released a year after the more documentary-style "Prefontaine," this version is slicker, more lyrical. Billy Crudup does an excellent job in the lead role (although I'd have to give the slightest nod to Jared Leto for looks in the other film), and Sutherland is good as usual as coach Bill Bowerman. Cameo appearances include veteran distance runner Frank Shorter as a newscaster, and "French Connection" director William Friedkin in a walk-on.
