A Pittsburgh weatherman journeys to a small town in Pennsylvania to witness the appearance of Punxsutawney Phil, the famed groundhog who can predict the weather. But things get a little crazy when the weatherman wakes up and Groundhog Day repeats itself all over again! And every time it ends, Phil has seen his shadow, a sign that winter will last another six weeks! This makes the weatherman so annoyed that he almost goes crazy. Kudos to Bill Murray for providing colorful comedy in portraying the weatherman.

Cynical and sarcastic Pittsburgh TV weatherman Phil Connors (Murray) has been sent for the fourth year in a row to the little town of Punxatawney to cover the appearance of the "rat," as he calls it, on Feb. 2. After a typical rotten day, he wakes up to find it's Feb. 2 all over again. He's trapped in an endless cycle of Groundhog Days! Now a "man without a future," we see him take the time to impress a lovely woman named Rita (MacDowell), as well as fight to change events or escape the cycle; in despair, he even tries to kill himself. (Feb. 2 occurs 34 times in the film, with other Feb. 2's implied by the dialogue.) Eventually it dawns on Connors that he can't change the situation -- he can only change himself. The film is more than a fine comedy: There's a lightly philosophical motif that works quite well, and Murray is perfect in a role just made for him.

You have to feel sorry for Phil the weatherman: he's rude, selfish, sarcastic, all-round egocentric. Of course he is, he is a media star, the gods' gift to media. Then the gods play the cruel-to-be-kind sort of tough love trick that only they know how to play. He is trapped in Smallville with Smallville people and lives the same day of his selfish little life over and over and over. It's fun for a while, but it's hell after a few months. He tries to check out, to escape, and he tries to check out of life, like permanently. But the gods decree he cannot die, and every night he goes to sleep and the next day they make it yesterday. He has to learn to be nice, be considerate, be a real human being. It's very funny, and very painful. He makes it in the end. I love it.
