Hercule Poirot (played by Peter Ustinov) the famous Belgian sleuth has taken a trip down the Nile on a luxury cruise with his friend and faithful assistant Colonal Race (played by David Niven). While on this cruise a series of events unfound when after only a few days Mrs Lynette Doyle is murdered. In this epic film Hercule Poirot must find out who commited the murder before time runs out and the cruise ends.
Poor young Jackie, Lynette's best friend and Simon Doyle's ex-Fiancee is still completely in love with Simon and is out to do everything possible to follow them and destroy the marriage. Salome Ottoborn is going to court with Lynette due to the fact that she had used Lynette's name in one of her romance novels and Rosaline Ottoborn, Salome's daughter loves her mother and will do anything to help her even if her mother is abit over the top and enjoys drinking.
Mr Andrew Pennington is a middle aged Lawyer who is out to get Lynette's money and lynette was on the verge of finding out just before she died. Jim Fergerson is an angry young socialist who despises rich people but still manages to fall in love with Rosaline after her mother is killed.
There are many other characters each with there own motive and only two with an effective alibi.

This is a great murder mystery film based on the classic novel of the 1930s by Agatha Christie, but made in 1978. The incomparable Peter Ustinov plays Hercule Poirot, the famous Belgian sleuth, alongside David Niven as Colonel Race, his faithful assistent, who happensa to be a British Lawyer. The story shows the famous rich American Linnette Ridgeway (Lois Chiles) getting shot through the head on a luxury trip down the River Nile. So, Poirot must uncover the killer. Suspects range from eccentric novelists (Angela Lansbury), to American Lawyers, to respectable Jewel Theives (Bette Davis). A great film, sticking fairly close to the original book.

Peter Ustinov is Hercule Poirot. This time the venerable Belgium detective is sailing down the Nile aboard a luxury steamer and on board are all types of nasty--and likely--villains. Agatha Christie never pulled any punches with her characters and now that they are brought to life on the screen, they become even more Christie-esque! And of course ith Dame Agatha, what you see is certainly not what you get! In plot that is as complex as the Riddle of the Sphinx (but hardly as simple!), the film moves at a dreadnaught speed! With incredible “cheesy” performances by Bette Davis, Angela Lansbury, and Maggie Smith (to name a few), the film is a lark. Viewers/readers of Christie know there is no use trying to use logic to figure out who done it (Christie wouldn't abide by this!) and so we
leave it up to Poirot to furnish the denouement in grand style. Fun, fun, fun, with David Niven expertly aiding Hercule.
