Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Scarlet and the Black (1983 TV)
In this exciting, moving, redemptive story, Gregory Peck portrays Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, an Irish Priest of the Roman Catholic Church of Rome. He takes on the entire Nazi regime, nearly at the cost of his own life, and succeeds in freeing nearly four thousand souls under his care. During his office as Monsignor, this courageous father dresses in different attire, including his disguise as a nun, and also a Nazi officer. Under continual oppression by his Nazi pursuer, (played by Christopher Plummer), he also comes under the scrutiny of Pope Pius XII (Sir John Gielgud)on the neutrality of the church. Monsignor O'Flaherty continues his courageous battle, even with the salvation of his enemy. A truly inspiring portrayal of heroism.
--Beth Schnell, Resident Scholar

Gregory Peck stars as Monsignor O'Flaherty, an Irish priest on assignment at the Vatican during the Nazi occupation. The good father is immersed in helping Rome's Jewish citizens escape Hitler (as well as other anti-Nazi supporters). It is the story of this heroic, courageous struggle to save as many lives (and souls) as possible before the Nazis get them. Suspenseful, indeed. But the movie is not above rifling criticism of Pope Pius XII's position that the Church should remain neutral.
--Bill Hobbs, Resident Scholar
