| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Becket |
Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole team up in "Becket," the story of Thomas a Becket and King Henry II and their tumultous, sometimes, violent relationship. Henry and Thomas are great friends; one day, however, fate intervenes when Henry has Thomas appointed as Archbishop of Canterbury.
Despite his earlier earthy days as a deacon and the king's best friend, Thomas now finds Religion and refuses to be the king's pawn. Two gigantic wills clash, and, as students of history know, Becket is murdered in the cathedral on that fateful 12th century day in Canterbury.
The film, based upon Jean Anouilh's play, is more than just about who'se going to rule England. It is an examination of two great friends and their friendship--alas, gone awry because of misused power, trust, and love. Both actors won Oscar nominations; directed by Peter Glenville.
