| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Basic Instinct |
After a retired rock star was found murdered in his bed, the police begin a search for the murderer. After apprehending the suspect (rock star's girl friend) it is found that she had written a book in which a rock star is murdered in much the same way. This begins a complicated plot leaving many people grabbing at each other's throats and destroying bonds between them.

This 1992 film caused a sensation, which was probably just what Dutch-born director Paul Verhoeven (Robocop, Showgirls) and Hungarian-born writer Joe Eszterhas (Showgirls, Sliver) were looking for. San Francisco detective Nick Curran (Douglas), recovering from alcoholism and drug abuse, takes a murder case whose details exactly copy a mystery by attractive and manipulative novelist Catherine Tramell (Stone), who happens also to be bisexual. Curran gets far too wrapped up in the case and the prime suspect. Stone gives it her all in this grimy story that leaves you feeling dirty after watching it. Jeanne Tripplehorn and Denis Arndt do good supporting work. Stone's dresses were designed to match, in order, the ones worn by Kim Novak in Hitchcock's "Vertigo," an equally tricky but far better movie.

Michael Douglas has to find out who killed a rockstar. All evidence points at Sharon Stone, but did she do it? After all she wrote a book about a murder done in the same style.
