| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Tora! Tora! Tora! |
The attack on Pearl Harbor that plunged the United States and Japan into war is retold. The title comes from the code phrase the Japanese flight leader used to indicate the attack was on ("tora" means "tiger"). The result is a sort of "Longest Day" in the Pacific -- a sweeping battle epic with thrilling war scenes but even less character development (and fewer stars; although it's a great piece of trivia that cast member Jason Robards had been in Hawaii at the time of the actual attack). One difference is that there is some depiction of the enemy point of view, complete with actual Japanese dialogue and subtitles (Admiral Yamamoto is sympathetically portrayed and probably gets more screen time than anyone.) This joint U.S.-Japanese production cost $25 million to make, a huge sum in 1970. Excellent score by Jerry Goldsmith, particularly the koto-based theme which quite resembles the Japanese classic "Sakura."
