| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Shadowlands |
Famed author C.S. "Jack" Lewis (Hopkins) is a middle-aged professor at an Oxford college when an American fan named Joy Graham (Winger) meets him for tea. She's frumpy (for Winger, anyway), and too loud and brash for a typical Oxford drawing room, but a romance blossoms. After a few short years of happiness together, Joy develops terminal cancer. Lewis's grief drives him to find a way to go on. William Nicholson wrote this screenplay based on his play, and Richard Attenborough quietly directed this 1993 tearjerker. Brit watchers will recognize John Wood and Peter Firth among the supporting cast.
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar

The well recognized and published Christian scholar, C.S. Lewis is "surprised by Joy" when he meets the verbally savvy American, Joy Gresham. Lewis'keen British intellect is matched by Joy's as they journey down the road of love and loss together.
--Tyra Hopkins, Resident Scholar

A bitter-sweet tale about CS Lewis's later life and his romance with an American, Joy Gresham.
