Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Gods and Monsters
It is 1957. The British director James Whale, semi-respected for making not only "Frankenstein" and "The Bride of Frankenstein" but "Showboat" and "The Invisible Man" many years before, but openly gay and recovering from a stroke, wastes away in Hollywood where many shun him and he can't find work. Depressed and haunted by memories of World War I and the loss of his first love, attended only by his faithful housekeeper Hanna (Lynn Redgrave), Whale befriends a young ex-Marine who gardens for him (Fraser). The great Ian McKellen is incredible in this role, Fraser quite good but Redgrave overacts. Co-writer/director Bill Condon magnificently recreates the original Frankenstein sets. A beautiful and very sad film about different kinds of monsters and tenderness.
