| Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Untouchables |
A treasury agent named Eliot Ness is tired of Al Capone. He assembles a four man team bent on taking Capone down. They seem to be getting off to a good start, but Capone and his men aren't going down without a fight. They kill two of Ness' men to show they mean business. This just makes Ness more determined to take him down.

In Prohibition Chicago, Al Capone rules the city with absolute impunity. Determined to take him down, Federal Treasury agent Eliot Ness (Costner) and his accountant partner (Smith) hand pick a team to avoid the rampant corruption in local law enforcement. Jim Malone (Connery, who won an Oscar for this role) is a seen-it-all beat cop who serves as mentor to Ness and the boys, while Agent George Stone (Garcia) is a sharp shooting rookie. This is clearly Brian De Palma's best film (it could have been done by Scorsese!), helped considerably by one of David Mamet's earliest screenplays. It's heavy on style (the climactic shootout in Chicago's Union Station features a baby carriage on a long stone stairway, in homage to Eisenstein's "The Battleship Potemkin") and gunplay. As with "Raging Bull" seven years before, De Niro stuffed himself to gain the weight necessary to fit into Capone-size clothing.
