Review Summary and Plot Commentary about The Talented Mr. Ripley
The Talented Mr. Ripley would be better named--The Psychopathatic and Amoral Serially Murdering Mr. Ripley.

Yes, the sets and cinematography are gorgeous (Jude Law and Cate Blanchett also, whose beauty and talent deserve better than this film).

Mostly, this film had no center and a protagonist who invokes hatred and disgust but not a scrap of sympathy.

Tell me something good about Tom Ripley?
Impossible.

Patricia Highsmith's creepy novel gets a filmmaker and cast that are sort of too good for it. After doing "The English Patient," writer/director Anthony Mingella turned to the story of a Manhattan lavatory attendant who borrows a Princeton jacket to play piano at a ritzy Manhattan party, pretends to know the wealthy son of the hosts, and is paid $1,000 to go to Europe and fetch the spoiled and lazy bum home. Tom Ripley fails to budge Dickie Greenleaf, but covetous of his life and wealth (and incidentally attracted to the cold, gorgeous snot), he contrives to kill him and take his place. A real classmate of Dickie's, Freddie Miles (Hoffman) smells a rat, and Dickie's longtime girlfriend Marge (Paltrow) gets suspicious too, so Ripley has to think and talk fast. This is a long, well crafted but cold movie; Damon is surprisingly good, and the much better actors around him do all right too. Venice and the southwest coast of Italy look especially inviting. But it's not a heartwarming story, by any means!
--David Loftus, Resident Scholar

The Talented Mr. Ripley is a very stylish depiction of a biblical Caine. Or, so described by the producers. I say good, interesting, sexy, bohemian-style, cool thriller for the thinking person. This vehicle underscores the talents of Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Jude Law: all superb
