Review Summary and Plot Commentary about Annie Hall
Alvy Singer (Allen), a neurotic Jewish New York comedian, looks back over a series of failed relationships. He grew up under the Coney Island rollercoaster and met Annie Hall, an aspiring singer from the Midwest. She's beautiful, carefree, and a rotten driver. Eventually, a record producer lures her to LA and Alvy can't bear to be away from New York. This 1977 film said a lot about love in the 1970s. Although many were upset that it beat "Star Wars" for the Best Picture Oscar (as well as winning Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress), this is one of Allen's best -- a seemingly simple and talky film about people's feelings that uses a surprising array of tricks, from split screen and cartoon imagery to children speaking to the viewer as if they were adults and a ghost Annie leaving the bed to pout.

Alvy Singer is a neurotic Jewish comedian living in New York. His whole life he has been looking for someone to marry. That is until he meets Annie, a singer.ashion. Throughout their entire relationship, he moves in with her, he buys her books about death, and she tells her to take a class. Then, Annie meets Tony Lacey, a hit record producer who offers her a job in Los Angeles. Alvy goes with her, but then gets bored, and heads back to New York.
--Estefan Ellison, Resident Scholar

A depressive, insecure, short, Jewish, New York comedian ruminates over his failed relationships right after the end of his last one with a flighty WASP singer-photographer. Diane Keaton started a fashion trend with her schlumpy, borrowed-from-men clothes and big hat. Possibly Woody Allens finest movie, probably his first grown-up one. Lots of commentary on New York and California culture of the 1970's (even a little bit about the Kennedy assasination). If you've ever had a failed relationship, this will really help you put it in perspective: "we need the eggs."
